- Dirt and Grease – Top layer of protection
- Slimy Biofilm – Middle layer of protection
- Bacteria and germs.
1. Top Layer Of Protection - Dirt And Grease
This is the top layer of dirt and grim that is the first in line of protection for the germs. This builds up over time and layers of germs and bacteria can develop under this defencive barrier.
It needs to be systematically removed with a heavy duty cleaner and degreaser. Normal soap will just not cut thought the mess and grim.

What Is Biofilm In A Wheelie Bin?
Biofilm is a thin, slimy layer of microorganisms that forms on surfaces in moist environments. It is made up of microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, along with the extracellular matrix they produce. The microorganisms in biofilm live in a close-knit community, which is held together by a slimy, glue-like substance called extracellular matrix. This matrix can protect the microorganisms from being killed by disinfectants, antibiotics, or other antimicrobial agents. Biofilm can form on many different types of surfaces including metal, plastic, glass, and even living tissues. It can also form in a variety of environments such as water systems, medical equipment, and industrial facilities. They can be found in natural environments such as rivers and lakes, and man-made environments such as water pipes, kitchen and bathroom fixtures, and medical equipment. It is important to remove biofilm because it can cause foul odors, unsanitary conditions, and contribute to the spread of infections.
3. Bacteria and Germs Reside Below The Top 2 layers Of Protection
Bacteria and germs can thrive in a wheelie bin due to the warm and moist environment created by the decomposition of organic waste. Commonly found bacteria in wheelie bins include
- E. coli,
- salmonella,
- and listeria,
all of which can cause food poisoning if ingested. These bacteria can also spread to other surfaces and areas around the house and garden, such as kitchen counters and utensils, if proper hygiene is not maintained.
Additionally, wheelie bins can also attract pests such as rats and flies, which can further spread bacteria and germs in the home. These pests can also cause structural damage to the home and can carry diseases that can be harmful to both adults and children.
To prevent the spread of bacteria and germs in the home, it is important to regularly clean and sanitise the wheelie bin. This can be done by hiring a professional bin cleanere such as Coastal Bin Busters.
Overall, bacteria and germs in a wheelie bin can be bad for your home and children. It is important to take measures to prevent the spread of these harmful microorganisms by regularly cleaning and sanitising the wheelie bin, practicing good hygiene, and properly handling and storing food.
Additionally, educating children about the importance of good hygiene can help prevent the spread of bacteria and germs in the home.
Our Golden Rule Of Bin Cleaning
Each stage of the bin clean is to combat all of the above.
Step One
The first step is to use our high pressure washer to remove all the grim and waste. Even with a high pressure washer not all of the grease will be removed so we use a cleaner to help. Our cleaner contains orange oil for that extra bite into oils and fats.
Step Two
After the top level of dirt has been succesfully removed we now have access to the horrible bio-film nasties that live in the bin. We use a food grade bio cleaner that helps neutralise the nasty smell and kills the germs. It has an added bonus that contributes the amazing smell we leave in our bins.
Step Three
This step is sort of combined with the previous step and that we have cleaned the bin and sanitised the inside. At this stage we also apply a fruity smelling deodorant that leaves the bins smelly really fresh.
