Maggots in your wheelie bin is a common issue, especially the General Waste Bin (red) and Garden Waste (Green Bin) and whilst there is no real evidence that can cause direct health problems they are still a disgusting pest.
What Are Maggots?
Maggots are fly larvae, usually of the common housefly and also the bluebottle and you will only have a problem with maggots if flies can get access to your waste.
- Flies are attracted to food and other rubbish,
- They lay their eggs on the rubbish,
- Later the eggs hatch into maggots.
What Causes Maggots?
Flies do not live for very long and a very quick gestation period. For a large part of the lifecycle is in the form of maggots.
Generally flies are unavoidable but maggots can be prevented. It’s natural for flies to want and lay their eggs in an enviroment that offers the best chance of survival such as your wheelie bin where there is lots of rotting food. So obviously by keeping your bins and surrounding area clean and free of rubbish will help keep the maggots away.
The best way is to hire us to regularly clean your bins. We use environmentally safe products and a water based insect repellent.
