You Can’t Mask A Smelly Wheelie Bin
Prevention Is Better Than A Cure!
It doesn’t matter what you do or how hard you try the foul smells that come from your wheelie bins will always dominate the surrounding area.
We have all been there, when it’s your turn to take the rubbish out. Just the thought of it starts to turn your stomach.
We cleaned 1,000s of bins and believe me we have seen it all and I can honestly say that the only thing that works is keeping your bins cleaned.
Here you can book in for a wheelie bin clean.
You may say I’m a little bit bias on this topic and that is true but the fact is whether you use Coastal Bin Busters or you do it your self a clean bin will alwasy smell better.
We highly recommend using Coastal Bin Busters to clean you bins as we will clean, disenfect and deodorise your bins better than you will be able to.
However, if you are not using us to clean your bins here are
6 Tips For A Stink Free Bin
1.Try to keep your bin in the shade.
We all know how hot it gets in Summer in the Ballina Shire and it’s no secret that heat promotes the decay process of your food scarapes and rubbish and the spread of bacteria and germs.
2. The Lemon
The lemon is a underwhelmed gem and is one of the best natural cleaning ingredients you can have in your house. It’s the ideal ingredient to cover up bad smells. Just place a few lemon slices on the floor of the bin (prefferable on some paper, see number 3)
3. Use old paper
The Ballina Shire Council only empty the General Waste bin (red) and Recycle Bin (yellow) fortnightly which gives your wheelie bin plenty of time to develop in the infamous bin juice at the bottom of your bin. This can be the main cause of the bad smell. By placing a few layers of paper at the bottom of the bin will soad up any liquids and help stop and bad odours. Also try wrapping food scraps in paper too.
4. Baking Soda
This amazing white powder is capable of so much more than just baking. It’s brilliant of absorbing odours, just by sprinkling some on the bottom of the wheelie bin. Job done!
5. Cat Litter
I’m still on the fence with this method but I still think it can contribute towards a stink free bin. Cat litter is used in the litter trays as an indoor toilet and does a pretty good job of masking the smell. I don’t mean use the contaminated cat litter but instead put some cat litter on the bottom of the bin.
6. Animal Poo
This is a “pet” hate of ours here in Coastal Bin Busters and it’s quite simple
BAG YOUR POO using “Oh Crap” compostable poo bags then place them in your landfill bin.
The compostable bags will stop the smell, but allow the poo to eventually break down in landfill.
You can read Ballina Council’s full Bin Guide here.
We have also written a full post about putting poo in your bins. Check it out.
